Teal Tuesday - Braided Mani aka The Fishtail Braid

Good morning everyone, today's Teal Tuesday manicure is the fishtail braid! This is a look I've been wanting to try since I've seen it floating around the internet. Several prominent bloggers have tried their hand at the fishtail braid and there are even a few good tutorials floating around the internet. Lucy's Stash has a great step-by-step and so does Mary at Swatch and Learn. I was worried I would "mess up" while trying this so I checked out both of those tutorials before I got started. Let me confirm for you that they definitely helped get me through this! Even though I did mess up a little bit, I used the colors in the wrong order, everything turned out great in the end. The fishtail braided manicure is way easier than it looks, and it looks amazing!

I used Illamasqua Viridian as my base color and China Glaze Deviant Darling plus Orly Solid Gold as my two accent colors to create the braid. Illamasqua describes Viridian as a peacock green but I see teal all the way. What do you say, teal or green? Deviant Darling is from the China Glaze New Bohemian Collection (swatches will be up tomorrow!), and Orly Solid Gold is one of those older polishes I saw on Nailside and just had to have.

Since Orly Solid Gold is actually a matte metallic shimmer, and a spectacular one at that, I took some pictures without topcoat to show the awesomeness it contains. Surprisingly, Solid Gold had a much thinner formula than I'd been expecting. I know mattes can be thick and hard to work with but Solid Gold gave me no troubles even though it did dry quickly. Can you tell a difference between topcoat v. no topcoat?

So there we have it, another installment of Teal Tuesdays! I have to say that this is my favorite design I've produced so far. I like it a lot, but under most lighting it is difficult to distinguish Deviant Darling from Viridian. They're clearly different to nail polish aficionados, but for the average person it might be hard to tell. Personally I like the subtlety of this manicure, I did it that way on purpose since I have a training class to participate in on Wednesday. I don't want my nails to be too flashy when I'm the only lady in a room full of dudes. lol So, what do you think? Does it work?
