31 Inspired Days of Nail Art 2012 - Orange Nails

Whoa, buddy! Today is challenge day number two and the color is ORANGE, and let me tell you what... my nails are orange. lol And juicy, I wish they were little orange candies! I'm trying to use the basic color days as opportunities to work on my stamping, but since my oranges are limited and I was plum fresh out of stamping ideas (already??), I thought I would give an ombre manicure a shot. My first thought was to do a gradient, but that's already a challenge in and of itself and I've decided to try and avoid repeated techniques. Ya know, so I can expand my nail art repertoire! So here I am, with bright ass orange ombre nails.

I used four different polishes, including two OPIs, a Zoya, and a China Glaze. I think it'll be easiest to list them by fingers!

  • Index: OPI A Roll In The Hague (1 coat) and Zoya Sienna (2 coats)
  • Middle: OPI A Roll In The Hague (2 Coats)
  • Ring: OPI In My Back Pocket (4-5 coats)
  • Pinkie: China Glaze Papaya Punch (3 coats)

First of all... for the ombre color gradient I think I should have switched my index and middle fingers, but I didn't want to break up the finishes with an odd shimmer/glass fleck right smack dab in the middle. Second, can you believe that In My Back Pocket took so man damn coats!? I was really getting agravated after coat #3 and it was still patchy. The formula wasn't bad per se, just super mega thin and watery. So, maybe, bad after all?

Overall, I really liked how it turned out! I didn't expect In My Back Pocket and Papaya Punch to go so well together because they look so different in the bottle, but once on the nail they looked great! Honestly, I was a little lazy with this. If I wanted to do a "true" ombre I would've taken the time to mix in white in varying degrees with one single color, but I thought it would be more fun to see if I could do it with colors I already had! Also, I'm resolved to do only one manicure per challenge. If I fail, you get to see my failure in all of its horribly disgusting glory. Excited for that? Just wait for yellow...

Be sure to check out my fellow challenge participants! (They're all pretty flippin' awesome.)
